Kia Recall: Kia Has Recalled 1.73 MIllion Vehicles Due to Fire Risk from Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (“HECU”).
On September 25, 2023 Kia America, Inc. (“Kia”) issued a recall of approximately 1.73 million vehicles due to the risk of fire (Recall No. 23V652000). According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) on certain Kia vehicles may experience an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.

- 2014-2016 Kia Cadenza
- 2010-2013 Kia Forte
- 2010-2013 Kia Forte Koup
- 2015-2018 Kia K900
- 2011-2015 Kia Optima
- 2011-2013 Kia Optima Hybrid
- 2012-2017 Kia Rio
- 2010-2011 Kia Rondo
- 2011-2014 Kia Sorento
- 2011-2013 Kia Soul and
- 2010-2013 Kia Sportage
Recalled Kia Related Injury/Incidents
According to a NHTSA Consumer Alert for the recalled Kia vehicles, “Kia does not know of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities associated with this defect. Kia knows of one engine compartment fire, three fires in the unit, and six instances of melting components.”
Remedy For Owners of Recalled Kia Vehicles
The Kia recall notice stated that owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the HECU fuse, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 14, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC284.
