Every summer my Armada has had this problem off and on. It always seemed to mysteriously go away. This past summer on the way home from Florida (I live in TN) the vehicle would jerk and eventually turn off. This was happening in very very heavy traffic. The vehicle would lose ALL power. I didn’t think I would every make it home and if I had not had a car load of people would have just towed it. I tried to stop at a few dealers but all of their Service Dept’s. were closed.
I finally got home and drove for a few days with no problems. I drove it to another town and on the way back it did it again. I took it straight to my local Nissan dealer where they drove it and determined the mass air flow sensor was clogged. I told them no way was that the problem. After researching I found that other people had the same issues and replaced the IPDM. Funny that not to long ago I mentioned to my husband that we needed to have this fixed. Today I get the recall notice. I feel vindicated. It will be fixed tomorrow. I can’t wait for this summer to see if the “ghost issues” are gone.

How did you get them to replace your entire IPDM assembly? My dealer replaced the ECM when I stalled out and could not restart my QX56 (had to tow it, and it, of course, started up on the first try upon arrival at the dealer). They replaced the ECM relay and reprogrammed my computer in late Dec 2010, but I just had another stall out today at a stop light.
This time I was able to get the car started again after about 5 minutes of waiting with everything off (but the hazards). I am already in the process of scheduling my next appointment, and the dealer has said they will make it right. I just hope I do not have to iterate on this back and forth to the dealer again and again. I would rather spend my time on more productive endeavors. On a side note though, I love my QX56, it has been a great car for hauling everything, and is very comfortable, even on long trips.

Took it to the dealer yesterday. We were told it was supposed to be a thirty minute job in and out. My husband took it in for me. He was very upset because he was there almost an hour and a half and the only reason he was not there longer was because he started asking questions and getting upset. They only replaced the ECM and not the IPDM. Now you have me a little worried that the IPDM just needs to be replaced. The weird thing about the whole issue is that the Check Engine light never acitivates. I learned that when it started to act up pull over turn it off and turn it back on, this resests the computer. So on the flip side, when it started acting up again I drove it straight to the dealer and did not turn it off at all. I had my husband call ahead and tell them I was on my way and what the deal was, so luckily they were there waiting for me. They were very nice, they did not charge me for the 30 minutes they spent driving it and cleaning out the air intake. I just think it’s weird also that this only happens in the summer time and really after I have been driving for a while.

I love love love my Armada, it tows, it hauls all of my jolly green giant kids comfortably and it has a lot of power, but I can’t have it sitting out every summer because of “ghost problems”. Seriously I don’t see how somebody has not been injured. My telling the story about my trip home from Florida was nothing compared to actually living it. Driving down the interstate and all of sudden the car would stall out. The last two hours of the trip you could not get up past a certain speed. We ended up taking back roads when we could. We stopped at on Nissan dealership only to find that we missed Service by thirty minutes, if I had had the money I would have just traded mine in for a new one.

Well, for me it was not fixed by the ECM relay or the IPDM replacement: both were replaced & the problem continued. It looks like it was fixed by replacing the crank shaft position sensor. For a bit they thought it might be the throttle body assembly, which could definitely cause the same issues, but it seems like the sensor was the culprit in my case. I was not angry: I felt my dealer was operating in good faith, & I know they were frustrated that it took three times at the dealer to get it fixed (thank goodness for loaner cars).

I own a 06 Titan. In march of 09 I was traveling at approximately 45
MPH as I apprpched a yellow light my truck simply lost power and I could.not stop I h
Braodsided a ford bronco., the air bags did not deploy and I hit my head on the steering wheel. End result I now have convulsions and brain damage. Thankfully the driver of the sub walked away. I recvd a few factory recall notices about a year to late. Are there any attorneys handling Nissan’s gross negligence?

    • Kelly Phillips March 3, 2012, 5:08 pm

I don’t know of any attorneys. I know Nissan claimed no injuries when the recall went out, but honestly I don’t see how. I am thinking that people just didn’t know that this was the cause of the problem.
I can say for me though, that since the recall I have not had any other issues with my Big A other than poor fuel mileage LOL.
